These images were inspired by the 2008 Olympic Games as I proudly witnessed Usain “Lightening” Bolt of Jamaica command his gold medal trifecta (100m, 200m and 4 x 100m Relay) in track and field. Though I will never see the likes of Olympic gold, seeing Usain’s running shoes reminded me of the night I rocked these babies at a company Christmas party in what seemed like a marathon on the dance floor. My feet deserve a medal of some kind for going the distance; we closed the bar that night!

Oh, and just to be clear (lest we forget), Usain Bolt’s “golden shoes” are not an original idea. The person who debuted such shoes is Michael Johnson of the USA (one of the greatest athletes in Olympic history) during his dominating performance at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta where he, too, won gold and shattered world records in the 200m and 400m.

On my way home from the office this week, I stopped by TJ Maxx to return a few items and decided to browse a bit before leaving. Boy am I glad I did! Completely by accident I stumbled upon these body products by Asquith & Somerset. The first thing that drew me to them was the packaging, then the scents and finally the prices. I figured why not give them a try, so I threw a couple of soaps and scrubs into my cart. On the drive home, something told me I had lucked up on a really good deal; once I got home and did a little research, I realised my instinct was spot on. Not realising at the time what a great deal I had, I only purchase four items; two body scrubs and two soaps.

While sifting through more old files last night, I ran across yet another of my personal writings from sometime around the latter half of 2000. If I recall correctly, it was during early fall, perhaps September, but certainly within a few weeks of my return from Jamaica that August. That much I do remember. I suppose I could look for the copyright papers, but the exact date I penned it really doesn’t matter to me at the moment. For me, the words are timeless. Regardless of when written, this piece is equally as appropriate, relevant and meaningful to my life today as it was then.

I finally received my copy of her self-titled, debut album, Nyee (pronounced “nigh-ee”) Moses. I’m not a professional critic, by any stretch, but I feel compelled to toss in my $.02 on this piece. Her vibrant talent is undeniable and the album is certainly all I had hoped it would be and more. This joint has all the right elements in perfect balance — lyrics, vocals, music, arrangement. The woman has certainly earned her props. Unlike many recent-day offerings from some artists, there’s not a bad song in the bunch. Mostly a fresh blend of sultry, neo-soulful, smooth-jazzy tunes with an unmistakable Sade-esque vibe (sans the melancholy), this compilation is definitely an album for lovers (with the exception of the last track, Summertime).

You! – Amazing, Unusual Man
Never have I met a man like you.
A most unusual man.
You are real, yet a dream. Keep reading…
Tough, but smooth.
Rough, yet cute.
Urban, but cultured.
Crazy, yet understanding.

Not much to say today. Well, maybe I just don’t feel like writin’ it out, but I’ve been doin’ some more thinking this week and I’m not quite done. To reiterate a comment I heard today, “I have learned a lot this week.” As it should be, more often than not, there is certainly more to people (and life) than meets the eye. Unfortunately, the things we learn are not always pleasant or comfortable, and sometimes they are downright disturbing.

Little did she know that all that time, under the guise of romance, she was actually rummaging for the love of a father she never had — in yet another man’s bed. Again! Too bad nobody warned her that it would be an endless search. A warning that might have spared her the pain, the humiliation of a hunt that would become the dance of her life. A dance she would perform o-ver and o-ver… in hopes of numbing her pain, filling that empty place in her soul. A place of silent desperation where self-love should be.
